Greeting SDCAE Members!

We’ve just  begun the new school year and we are already faced with a host of new challenges. While we are still learning to navigate teaching in a pandemic, new COVID variants are emerging posing additional threats to our already delicate educational system. This, coupled with the safety challenges inherent in the work we do, is why safety will be a primary focus of SDCAE’s work this year. We are currently coordinating with our Site Reps and with SDCOE leadership to establish site-based  safety committees in all of our programs. Our goal is  to collaboratively troubleshoot and resolve safety concerns at the site and program level in order to address issues quickly and efficiently.  We encourage everyone to share  concerns with the members of your site committee so that together we can create safer working environments at every site.

Also fundamental to our work this year is advocacy and empowerment.  In an effort to promote this throughout our programs, we are here to support you in acting and advocating for yourselves and each other, and interceding only where intervention is necessary. We are at our best when every member feels empowered to make their individual voice heard and  when every member commits to being part of the solutions that will benefit us all.

Lastly, we are dedicated to  improving communication and keeping you informed about the work we are doing, and the opportunities and benefits that we have as CTA members. We have recently launched the SDCAE Weekly, a brief list of informational  items, events, and resources, which you can look for in your Monday inbox.

Please take the time to thank your Site Reps for their  work and dedication, and take the time to appreciate one another.

In Solidarity,

Steph

A new President's message from Stephanie Cruz will be coming later this month. We look forward to hearing from our incoming president and thank her for her many years of leadership and service as Vice President, especially during this Covid - 19 pandemic. We welcome her to her new role as A of E's president.

In the meantime, we say farewell to former President, Tammy Reina, and thank her for many years of service and leadership in this position. We especially thank her for leading us through the early days and first year + of the Covid - 19 pandemic. She worked skillfully as a team with management to support the needs of staff and students. San Diego County Association of Educators
WE STAND WITH UTLA! ¡ESTAMOS CON UTLA!
JANUARY 15, 2019

On behalf of San Diego County Association of Educators receive a comradely salute to your cause, which we embrace as our own.  We stand in solidarity with your struggle because we believe that achieving these demands requires worker unity. We continue to be on the side of the workers and are in full agreement for what you are fighting for:
  • SMALLER CLASS SIZES
  • MORE NURSES, COUNSELORS, PSYCHOLOGISTS AND LIBRARIANS
  • LESS TESTING & MORE TEACHING
  • COMPETITIVE WAGES
  • CHARTER AND CO-LOCATION REGULATION
  • REAL SUPPORT FOR SCHOOL SAFETY
  • COMMUNITY SCHOOLS & SUPPORT FOR FAMILIES
  • GREATER INVESTMENT IN ADULT ED
  • EARLY ED & BILINGUAL ED
We believe that the demands counter what the privatization of education has reduced or eradicated.  We recognize that for-profit motives are currently devastating the education of our children. SDCAE services the collateral damage of these effects: students who are incarcerated, pregnant or parenting, in foster care, expelled, chronically truant, in drug treatment centers and group homes for neglected or abused children, and/or experiencing homelessness.
Today more than ever, teachers and other education workers need to join the fight for better living and working conditions, to push back against the national trend that breaks down unions and struggle for the right to collective bargaining! We struggle for our rights as well as the rights of our students and the democratic schooling we need and deserve as we work towards a liberating education.  We need to reject the rising tide of privatization in education, and view it as an attack on our labor, our profession and an especially brutal attack on our students and communities! We stand in solidarity with the maestr@s of Los Angeles, creating a working class front line to face the growing attacks on public education. With the current US economic and political climate, we see teachers as critical participants in the growing class struggle!
We believe in advancing the cause of free, universal, and quality public education while improving the conditions of teaching and learning. We also demand the promotion and protection of civil rights for all children and youth in order to secure a more just, equitable, and democratic society. United in struggle, students, teachers and community we reclaim our human dignity! For these reasons, we stand firmly in solidarity with the striking Teachers of Los Angeles!
